  • Kpop Concerts 101: Everything You Need to Know

I welcome you the complete HOW TO guide on attending KPop concerts in Korea. I frequently get asked all sorts of questions about attending KPop concerts so this post will adhere to those every needs and desires 😉

What is my credibility to speak on this?

I’ve seen Rain (4 times), Big Bang (6 times), G Dragon <solo> (6 times so 12 times total^^), Taeyang <solo>  (once), 2NE1 (6 times), Psy (3 times), Shinee, TVXQ, Super Junior (twice), 2PM, Infinite, UKiss, Se7en, Lee Hi (twice), Xia Junsu, Girls Generation (3 times), VIXX (4 times), BTS, Spica, B.A.P., M.I.B., 4Minute, Sistar, Jay Park (3 times), B2ST (twice), Park Hyo Shin (twice), CN Blue, Boyfriend, 2AM, Kara, IU, Teen Top, Tablo (twice), B1A4 (twice), ZE:A (twice), Jewelry, 9 Muses (twice), JinuSean and many others.

I think that sums it about up! So shall we begin?

    What I’ll go over

    • Location/Time
    • English Help
    • Merchandise
    • Overseas fans
    • What NOT to do
    • Media

    Tickets
The price for Kpop concerts is based soley on the company to which the artists are signed. To my knowledge it seems if the artist has been in the game a while, their tickets tend to be a bit more expensive (like Rain’s concert 166,000 or Psy’s 132,000) but overall you’ll end up paying anywhere between 88,000 W – 100,000 W. ($82-$94 USD)

    Price
    *April 2015 Update*
So I know a lot of you are preparing for Big Bang’s new world tour. Since releasing ticket info, Big Bang’s concert has gone up in price $30 for general admission and $62 for a new “special” seat.
    ________
    YG Family Concert: 88,000 won

2NE1 88,000 won (YG Family Concert & New Evolution Tour)

    Big Bang *April 2015 Update*
BB World Tour on April 24 – 26 is $110 for general and special seats are $150

88,000 – 90,000 (YG Family Concert & Alive Galaxy World Tour)
(From 2011 – 2013 these were the ticket prices)

    G Dragon: 88,000 – 90,000 (One of a Kind World Tour)

Psy 110,000-132,000 (Super Soaked Concert) 55,000 – 166,000 (Psy Happening)

    Se7en 88,000 (YG Family Concert)

    B2ST: 90,000 (Beautiful World Tour)

    Mblaq: 90,000 (Blaq% Tour)
Rain: 166,000 (Rain The Best of Tour)

    Junsu: 90,000 (Tarentallegra Tour)

Super Junior: 99,000 (Super Show 5)

2PM: 77,000 – 99,000 (What Time is it Tour Grand Finale)

SM artists tickets tend to be between 90,000 – 99,000 won.

JYP artist’s concert are around 90,000 won.

In Korea there’s usually one set price for ALL tickets, meaning nose bleed section and standing in front of stage section are going to be the same price. So it’s all about timing, getting the seat you want before it’s gone. The other option the companies use is the standing section will be a little higher but not by much. Ex: Standing Sections 90,000 W Seating Sections 88,000 W.

Extra info: Sunday night is the best night to attend a KPop concert as the fanclub’s always have something special planned and the encores go on a little longer 😉 Second best night would be Saturday.

How to Know Schedules of Upcoming Concerts (Update Feb 14th)
There really isn’t a single place that keeps up with upcoming concerts so you must do this yourself. Subscribe and follow blogs and websites of your favorite groups. Since I’m a BB fan and use blogger, I subscribe to various VIP blogs that always update on anything happening. So if you’re a B2ST fan, follow B2ST fan blogs around the globe no matter the language. (Heck I follow a Spanish Miyavi blog!) Subscribe to get emails whenever the admin posts, if you use Blogger, follow the blogs, if you use WordPress  do that thing they do with WordPress. Lol.

If you’re a YG fan, you MUST download the YG Ent Official Family App. It’s amazing and ALWAYS updated. Most events they post about are in Korea, but if you want to keep up with YG Family, this is how you do it. And IT’S FREE.

    Google Play Store
    Download YG Family App

    ITunes Store
    Download YG Family App (IPhone)

    Where to Purchase
Tickets are usually sold on one of 4 Korean sites.
    1) Gmarket
    4) Yes24

    Useful Online Vocab
    매진 – Sold Out

    *April 2015 Update*
Big Bang’s tickets are exclusively sold on GMARKET so you will not be able to find them else where (unless they’re bootleg or a resell)

Please note that yes some of these sites do have a English language option BUT it WON’T allow you to purchase concert tickets.

The Global Interpark site is the ONLY site that people outside of Korea can register and buy tickets from. All you need is your name and phone number. Also you must enter in a number for your home phone but since most people don’t have one nowadays, simply type in 000-0000-0000. If you leave it blank it won’t let you complete your registration.

For the other 3 sites you MUST have an Alien Registration Card to be able to register and purchase. If you do not work or permanently live in Korea then you wouldn’t have been registered an ID.

When purchasing online, you pick your tickets up on the day of the event, have them mailed or pick them up on site. It just depends on what site you use and what options they give.

Registering on the all Korean language sites takes a good 45 minutes (if your not a native Korean speaker) so be patient. You will need your passport number, ID card, address, work address, and work number. When you look up your address just type in your city. From there, choose the zip code closets to you then type in the rest of your address. (This part can be quite a hassle.)

*A tip you will thank me for*

As tempting as it is, don’t try to buy tickets when they first go on sale. You’ll never get in (because the massive about of people trying to access the site at once will make things go bonkers) and you’ll feel hella disappointed when only sucky seats are left. (Trust me I know!) If you want a good seat, just go to the venue the day of the concert you want to attend and wait in line.

    At the Venue

Usually the ticket booth opens 3 hours before the show. There is always a line for tickets so get there an hour or so ahead so you can have a good spot in line. If the concert starts at 6pm, I’d say get there between 1- 2 pm. (Trust me time goes by FAST!) Plan to stand in line anywhere from 30 minutes to 1-3 hours. Depending on the popularity of the artist and what time you get there depends on your wait time. KPop concerts are an all day thing (especially if you don’t have a ticket yet.) I say this because there’s so much to do, standing in line for tickets and merchandise, entering into various contests, playing games at the different booths, etc. It’s quite the experience!

If you have standing section tickets then you must exchange your ticket at the designated white booths for a wrist band. It’ll let them know you are in the standing section. The booths usually have a white canopy over them and are infront of the line for the standing section outside. (The words are usually in English.) You also need to get in line early so that you can get a good spot close to the stage when they let you rush in there. If you have seating tickets then there’s no need to line up early. Just hop in line when you see it moving. Doors usually open up at an hour to 45 minutes before show time.

    Ticket Scalpers
There will always be a handful of Ajushi’s suspiciously walking around whispering “Ticket, Ticket.” I’ve even seen them put tickets inside a glove and walk past the official ticket line to try and entice people. I’ve never bought from them as I’m nervous to what would happen if I presented the ticket at the door and someone say something was wrong. I wouldn’t have a receipt to show and that would be a problem. I’d personally rather pay my own money for a legit ticket at the booth and not have to worry myself. If you do choose to buy from an unofficial Ajushi, let me know how it goes.

    Special thing to note:
In Korea, everything is done outside. No matter the temperature, no one’s allowed to go inside the venue until show time. Tickets, merchandise, everything is done outside.

    Location
KPOP concerts are held at one of two areas in Seoul.

    Olympic Park Stadium
    Olympic Gymnastics Hall
    Jamsil Stadium

Olympic Stadium (but for some reason, written on the building
says Olympic Hall. So don’t get confused.

Now the EXTREMELY confusing part about these two places is that they go by two to three different names. I’ve ended up going to the wrong venue many times and it can be difficult to find which is right.

    Aliases
Olympic Park aka Olympic Gymnastics Arena
This area also includes Olympic Gymnastics Hall which is across from Olympic Arena.
This arena is AT the actual Olympic Park Station (역). For some reason in Seoul there are two parks named Olympic. Most concerts will/have been at this venue, GD One of a Kind World Tour, BIGBANG Alive Galaxy Tour, 2NE1 New Evolution, Super Junior Super Shows etc.

Olympic Gymnastics Hall is a smaller venue that a lot rookie groups or solo artists use. Artists who’ve performed there include EXO K, Infinite H, MBLAQ Blaq% Concert, and Jay Park New Breed Concert.

How to get there; Purple line #5 Olympic Park Station, Olympic Stadium Exit. It’s about an 8 minute walk to the stadium through the park.

    Next Popular Venue
The other large venue goes by even more aliases. Seoul Olympic Stadium aka Jamsil Sports Complex aka Seoul Sports Complex aka Jamsil Gymnasium aka Jamsil Indoor Stadium.

    Whew! Right?
The most frequent name I’ve seen used is Jamsil Stadium, but it depends on who you ask!

Xia’s Tarantellegra and 2PM’s What Time is It Seoul Finale concerts used this venue along with the Samsung Thunders Basketball team playing all their home games there.

    How to get there:
Green line #2 Sports Complex Station, Stadium exit.

    *April 2015*
Lately a lot of concerts have been held at various venues other than those listed above (and usually more intimate.) When I get time I’ll list some of them but otherwise just make sure you research the directions well so you don’t get lost.

    English Help

Out of all the concerts I’ve been to YG surpasses them all when it comes to English speaking help. I know the companies don’t HAVE provide English service BUT in today’s era where they’re actively promoting to English speaking people, these services should be available. YG artist concerts ALWAYS have fluent English speaking staff that can help solve any problem or question you have. I’ve attended YG concerts since 2011 and it’s always been consistent. Other concerts I’ve attended, it’s always a gamble. Sometimes I have trouble finding assistance in English, sometimes I don’t. Hopefully soon Kpop companies will have consistent and better English services as they see the increase of non-Korean speaking fans attending concerts in Korea.

    Fan Chants
If you stay around or near the venue for long enough you’ll have someone come and talk to you about the fan chant or event taking place that day. Also as you enter the venue you should be given directions/materials for that day’s events. Ex: For The Final BIGBANG Alive Tour Saturday and Sunday concerts, a girl came up to my friend and I in the cafe near by and asked us if we knew about the chant for the song “Lies.” When we got to the venue we were given balloons and a small card with directions translated in English for what to do during “Haru Haru.” For the Sunday show we were given yellow “Thank U&U” cards with directions in English on the back.

    Merchandise

Merchandise from 2NE1 New Evolution Tour (Seoul)

Merchandise for Kpop concerts are usually displayed very elaborately. You’ll usually get a brochure of the products available and can pick from there. The only concert (other than free ones) that I’ve seen no official products sold was the Jay Park New Breed Concert. Possibly because it technically wasn’t a “Kpop” concert.

The merchandise booths usually open pretty early, anywhere from 10:30 am onward. The close about 2 hours before showtime (YG concerts.)
For the Big 3 and Cube they’ll be designated tents where you can purchase merchandise. There will also be what I call “bootleg” merchandise you can buy. It’s basically unofficial merchandise sold by Kpop stores around Korea that come to the concerts to sell their related Kpop stuff. It’s best to purchase stuff from them Sunday night since they try to get rid of as much as they can so they’ll give a discount. It’s definitely okay to buy from these places so have no worries.

GD One of a Kind World Tour Merchandise

Concerts (Big Bang, 2NE1, Rain, 2PM, Super Junior, Junsu and probably all the others) will have tents that say “Merchandise Pay” where you pick out your stuff and pay for it. They’ll then give you two receipts and you move over to the next tent connected labeled “Merchandise Pick Up.” This is where you give them your receipts. they stamp them and you’ll receive your merchandise. And bam!

If something breaks or messes up while you’re there (that same day), go back to the merchandise tents and explain what happened (even if it’s closed.) Make sure to keep your receipts to verify you purchased the product.

    Free stuff
A lot of times the various fan clubs will give out free stuff. Either it be fans, candy, stickers or pictures. They’re not affiliated with the companies so the girls probably won’t be able to speak much English. Be aware that sometimes they don’t want to share. I personally have gotten the side eye from some fan groups when I came over to ask how to get a fan, picture ect. Other times I’ll have the fan club come up to me and give me free ish. (Looking at you Korean VIPS who dress up in animal costumes <3.)

    Overseas Fans

Any KPop concert you’ll attend you’ll see a large number of buses parked with many people coming out dressed really cute. You’ll think “Oh wow, what’s this?” You’ll soon find out it’s the Japanese fans attending in large droves. It’s really cool to see their outfits as they always put together the most elaborate and cool costumes. It’s nice to see different cultures coming together for Kpop but sometimes a situation can occur that affects you personally.

    Problems that can occur

J fan clubs have a lot of pull. Sometimes standing section tickets (online) will have been allotted for only J fans to purchase. I’ve only had a situation(s) occur at Junsu’s concert. It seems some companies allow dollars (eh hum, more appropriately Yen) to manage what they do. Since we’re non Korean, we’re all foreign fans and should be treated equally so. It’s not right to shun certain fans because that fan’s demographic’s spending power isn’t as great as another foreign fan bases is. This problem falls with company’s and what they allow to happen. If a problem like this happens to you at any concert, don’t be afraid to voice your opinion and write to who you see fit.

    What Not to Do

The only major no-no is recording or taking pictures when there are posted signs that say not to do so. I don’t know HOW people sneak and do it ESPECIALLY at YG concerts! They DON’T PLAY. The huge security guard will TAKE your camera or phone and delete ALL your photos, no matter if they are of the concert or not, AND/OR kick you out. I’ve seen plenty of folks escorted out. It’s so NOT worth it. I had my camera taken away once at my first YG Family concert in 2011. At that time I had only attended one other Kpop concert (Rain The Best of) and didn’t know of the no camera thing. My camera got taken away and he tried to kick me out but I just ducked into the crowd and every time I saw him I’d look away and duck some more. I think since it was so many people he just said “Forget it.” I had even looked up and dude was in the audience RIGHT BEHIND ME. Oh gosh. YG security guards are SO SCARY. They’re like 6’3 300 lbs. Anywho after it ended I asked for it back and randomly started saying stuff in English to him. I think he thought I was a bit crazy. I waited 10 minutes after the show and it was returned back to me.

The camera thing solely depends of the company though. I’ve recorded freely at the Jay Park and B2ST concerts. Also if it’s a free concert you’re free to record and TRUST Koreans take full advantage of that. They’ll bring freaking 5 ft camera stands with an expensive Canon and just sit there recording the entire show. Lol.

I guess this next part has more to do with simple etiquette than anything.

At the Free Gangnam concert with GG, SS and TVXQ, this foreign chick BROUGHT a stool, STOOD on it BLOCKING EVERYONE and freaking recorded Kyuhyun during SJ’s set. Then when TVXQ came on stage she SAT down in her stool BLOCKING EVERYONE around her going through her damn camera ignoring TVXQ. RUDE! I bit my tongue so hard to not say something to her. Aish!
Also yelling random ish in English from the crowd when the host/person on stage isn’t talking to you is not okay! This happened at the MU:CON showcase with VIXX. M.I.B. A host was asking a foreign fan something from the stage and another chick yelled out “LA!” The host basically told her he wasn’t talking to her.
Last but not least yelling “Speak in English” is quite rude and pointless. You’re in Korea, the artist is Korean…that should explain enough.

    Media

There’s no denying that when you’re a foreigner (specifically from the west or non Asian) you will get attention from the media. They love to show that “foreigners love Kpop.” I mean it’s awesome and everything as long as you don’t let it get to your head. 🙂

Screen cap of me from the 2NE1 New Evolution DVD.

I’d advise to not go around “seeking” attention: standing by the KBS bus or acting out etc. Just let it naturally come to you. If your dressed up like that artist or have a cool hairdo, you’ll gain attention. The best part of Kpop concerts (other than the show itself) is dressing up (in my opinion.) Being able to just go wild for a day and let the creative juices flow, is music to a fashionista heart. 😉

For some reason I’ve gotten the most interviewed at Rain concerts. His Rain the Best Show and Rain Last of the Best free Gangnam concert, both times I got interviewed 4-5 times. Maybe since he was about to enlist, the media had a heavier presence but usually I just get my picture taken or say some encouraging stuff on camera.

    Media I’ve acquired

So I hope this guide helped you enough! I might have forgot a few things so if you have any other questions, post it in the comments and I will answer them. As I do, I will add the information to this post.

    Good luck!

    FAQ
    How’s the sizing?
There aren’t S,M, L’s to choose from so must know your measurement to check if the item you want will fit. Their measurements are done in cm.. For those who are more familiar with measuring in inches (i.e. me!) here’s the conversion 2.54 cm = 1 inch.
    Let’s use an example

The measurements for this top are as follows.
Shoulder: FREE 58      Chest Width   110       Sleave length 47.5      Full Length 55

If you see FREE written, that indicates the shirt is free size (aka an oversized top) and should fit most people. The 58 cm is to give an exact measurement of the free size. So 58 cm = 22.83 inches top. 22 inches is between a XXL and an XXXL (misses). If your size is smaller or around that range, the shirt will work for you!
    How can I pay?
You can use PayPal to make your purchase. This is the only form of payment at this time.

How can I track my order?
With each purchase you will be emailed a confirmation number but tracking numbers are not available.

    What’s the return policy?
Any items you are not satisfied with may be returned within 2-4 days from the time received in its original condition.

  • MAMAS (Mnet Asian Music Awards) 2012 Top 5 WTF Moments

The MAMAS (MNET Asian Music Awards) recently aired with the biggest names in Asia in attendance. Popular artists from all over Asia performed, most notably Big Bang, Super Junior, American rapper BOB and many more. As I watched it on TV some major WTF moments caught my attention! Check out my TOP 5 WTF’s!

Also what were your favorite moments from the show?

    5) JYP aka the Asian P.Diddy

Unfortunately JYP thinks he’s a little more important than he actually he which is EXTREMELY comparable to what P.Diddy thinks of himself as a rapper. Both need to bring it down a FEW notches! And why did JYP feel the need to rip his shirt off?..sigh..

    4) You’re on Candid Camera!

The saying goes there is always someone watching you so be cautious of what you do. Well you’d think the celebrities would know that by now. Goo Hara got caught whispering and pointing at GA-IN while she was on stage and Super Junior members kept being caught looking half sleep.

    3) Pink Panther and Why Are You Here?

There’s a tie for 3rd place. First up is TOP’s pink ensemble that spoke to his inner M.Bison from Street Fighter. But I gotta say from a fashion standpoint THAT OUTFIT WAS ON FIRE. Who said men can’t rock pink?
Korean article states “Top’s charisma isn’t too much to wear pink.”

Second is Adam Lambert. For the life of me of couldn’t figure out WHY in the heck he was at the Asian music awards. Maybe he’s got a little Asian in him? He didn’t even do a collab with a kpop star like BOB did with Seo In Young and K.Will. BUT a few days later while scouring Korean sites for some info I ran across tickets for an Lambert concert in Seoul in February. I’m guessing he’s trying to get more promotion before his concert.

    2) Why So Serious?

Epik High dressing up as the Joker, Bain and Two Face from Batman was very intriguing  I love how care free they are but it took me forever to figure out who was in the Joker mask because I missed the first 30 minutes of the awards. And obviously by the MAMA after party video footage uploaded on Youtube where Tablo’s jumping on the DJ booth, shows they really do know how to party.

    1) Cray Cray Jay Jay

Big Bang’s performance of Fantastic Baby/Crayon was EPIC. There’s no debating that but one thing that stood out most to me was a different GD on stage. It was very dark and sexy, not the usual playful leader we usually see. I want more of that GD!! Since everybody and they mama got an alter ego now, how about GD have one?
And I also liked his no shirt on outfit too 😉 AND the blue contacts. Kawaii!

You can check out BB iconic performance here!

With Korean pop sensation PSY’s “Gangnam style” still tearing up the air waves across the globe months after its release, one can’t help but wonder… what next  from the “Hallyu” phenomenon will stir up a world wide trend!
I’d like to think its the fashion. Personally I am not a fan of straight Korean fashion (I guess you’d have to live there to truly know what I mean). But I love when fashionistas fuse American or European chic with Korean style.
One blogger/vlogger (who is also a fashion designer) in particular does it so poetically, that I am surprised she has not been scooped up by the best of the best in the Asian fashion houses yet. I give it another year or two til her name and inspiration is all over the media 😉
Many of you already know Ms. April Jackson from YouTube channel recounting hilarious stories about her life Korea.
But if you don’t you can also check out her blog under the same moniker(Pink Fashion Ninja) here

     Please introduce yourself.

Well Im a gal from Kansas City who miraculously ended up in Korea! Ive loved world cultures since I was a child. Egypt and Asia were the two places I had always dreamed of going. Im a Scorpio (Zodiac) and Earth Dragon (Chinese year) so I think that explains me pretty much in a nutshell! I go after my aspirations and dust my shoulders off and rebound from my defaults and mistakes, all while wearing spiked heels and a pink tulle skirt. 😉

What do you love about living and teaching in South Korea?

I enjoy learning and experiencing another culture. Things can be so different at times and it has equipped me to better understand and deal with various people and cultures. My students at my new school are amazing. Theyre so inquisitive and fun. I enjoy being around them everyday and seeing their smiles. Though teaching isnt my passion, I’m grateful to have really nice students. I also like how Im giving back to others by providing ESL teaching. Im able to share and help others who want to advance in the language.

Would you ever work/teach in Japan?

    Tokyo, Japan
Ah! I visited Japan in August for vacation and came to the conclusion, No. Why because Id spend so much money shopping that I wouldnt have money for food. Lol. I was actually moving to Japan before I decided to come to Korea but my plans fell because the Tsunami had hit. My mom was going bonkers and insisted Id be a fool to go over there at that time, so I switched my plans over to Korea since I liked the culture. As long as I was in Asia I knew Id be happy. I also wouldn’t want to teach there because a lot of times the teachers aren’t under contracts, you have to work at multiple schools, and your not really guaranteed hours. Also they dont pay for your rent and its extremely expensive as we all know. So if I were to live there it would have to be me doing fashion as a job.
How would you define your style?

Wow. Id have to say my blog title would explain it to some degree, Pink Fashion Ninja. I was in branding class in college one day and the instructor asked us to describe ourselves to make a brand. A friend of mine shouted out PFN and it stuck with me from there. Pink would describe me as being very colorful, fun and unpredictable. Fashion is pretty self explanatory but I feel that style runs through my veins.
My grandmother was 7 years old when she started making clothes for her entire family and her style genes and knowledge passed down to my mother and I (it seemed to skip my other family members though. 😉 )

Because of my grandmother I know that fashion isnt supposed to be vein. Its to express yourself and sometimes hide/suppress the pain your dealing with.
                                                     -April Jackson

She went through A LOT in her life that no words can describe but EVERYDAY she was dressed to the T, every Sunday the hat was crisp, and her kids were well dress. No one would ever know the pain she had to deal with at home. Even if some did they were flabbergasted at how everyday shed manage to look like a million bucks. I believe fashion can show your strength and that no matter what youre dealing with to always take care of yourself. Then the Ninja part is simply because I love Asian culture more specific butt kicking movies 😉 And when kicking butt we must be sexy right? Lol.

Name 2 male Kpop stars or boy bands that you would love to dress.  What about 2 female Kpop stars or girl bands?

    Rain:
First which most would expect from me would be Rain . NOT because I want to see him naked..(maybe) but that I would love to be the one to implement his new refreshed image when ends his military duty. During his later years hes been in suits and very well polished which I love but I think a good transition would be a boho, monochromatic laidback but still put together type of look. The kind of I dont carelook. To visualize it think of Japanese guitar god Miyavis new look. After a wife and two kids he changed from visual kei and crazy colors to a monochromatic laid back style. I feel Jung Jihoon would look GOOD in a loose fitting white shirt and harem pants with black boots. Whew!

    BOB4:
Theyre a brand new Kpop band thats out. Very FT Island/CN Blueish but seem to have their own flair. I first experienced them at Jay Parks New Breed concert in Seoul with them doing a rendition of 2NE1s “I love you.” I feel theyre still trying to find a look for themselves, especially the lead singer. Id like to see them in really geeked out different patterned high watered suits. Id throw a top hat on the leader. Id give the guitarist colored drum sticks to match his outfits.
    2NE1:
Just because theyre so awesome. For a video or performance Id dress them really girly and feminine. Flowy and form fitting dresses with gold jewelry (to contrast with their fierce edgy style that I LOVE). Id put Minzy in a cute but sporty dress showing her legs. Since shes a dance machine Id add some short lace leggings. Minzys a really attractive and sexy woman but since in Korean society shes still seen as a teen and that shes not the ideal look people don’t’ really see her. Shes gorgeous, fierce and sexy and I cant wait til shes of age so she can show it!
    Park Min Young:
The female lead in City Hunter and Sungkyunkwan Scandal. In my opinion shes the most gorgeous actress in Asia. Shes gentle, sweet and cute as a button. Id like to dress her with that image but also throw in some hot red lipstick, smokey eyes with a Valentino gown. Give her a daring look. Id even like to see her with shorter hair since her face is so petite and small. Kinda choppy to contrast with her sweet persona.

Where is your favorite place to shop in Korea?

    Korean shoe store ShoeSone

Various places really. I’m visiting Sinsa-dong this week because I’ve read how different and cool their shops are. And also Kpop loving brand Joyrich has a shop there. I found out about an open fashion market open once a month in Gangnam I will check out this weekend. Places I already love would be Hongdae. My favorite shoe store ShoeSone is there and the clothes in Hongdae are very artsy. I really love Gangnam Station because you can buy clothes for only 10,000won ($8USD) because they’re always having sales. Subway stations in Seoul have HUGE underground shopping areas and a lot of times department stores are connected with them too. Probably Dongdaemun is my absolute favorite place in Korea because it’s geared more toward creating and styling clothing. They sell absolutely everything you would need and ever want to make something. Fabric, feathers, buttons, appliques  rhinestones, you name it. I get rhinestones and studs there for face masks I make and will start selling. It’s a fashionistas oasis.

How would you compare Korean fashion to the fashion you saw in Japan?

There really is a huge difference. Korea’s style is more on a neutral palate with flowy fabrics. The women usually wear suit jackets with short skirts and heels. Or you’ll see sport dresses with thick socks and Adidas or Nike running shoes. A lot more laid back so there really is a Seoul Style and a Gangnam style. It’s more like a dress code. It’s definitely cute and stylish but with that creativity can lack drastically. There are definitely exceptions to the rule, which I’ve seen quite a few times. Those people are the ones I think are the most fashionable. Pink or blue hair with a spiked jacked on. Men definitely stick to skinny legged pants or jeans, button ups and man bags. With Japan even though Tokyo is known for its fashion, it’s not just one standard fashion style. There are SO many varieties of style to be a part of. And when you choose your group it is literally like a community. They have their own areas, fashion mags and famous models that represent their look for example visual kei, Harajuku, Lolita, Gothic Lolita, Gyaru. The fashion is a lot more free and inhibited. It mostly has to do with how accepting the general public is about it.

Where do you see your brand in the next 5 years?

In 5 years I want my brand to be constantly moving and growing. I know I want to MC and host fashion and music related things. So within that 5 years time I hope to have transitioned into that. I want to establish an accessory line and continue blogging and vlogging in Asia. Continuing expressing myself, promoting Asian fashion and music, and giving insight into life abroad is my goal for a while. I have such supportive people who follow my blog and vids that I want to continue doing for them and giving inspiration to people who want to travel abroad. The sky is the limit!

Seoul fashion week is swiftly approaching. Will you be attending any events? Whose show would you love to get a ticket for?

    Caruso SFW 2013 (Oct 22nd)
I’m so excited to be going again but one of the obstacles is figuring out what’s going on. I feel with Korea rising as a country in the world spotlight, Seoul Fashion Week creators should have more language options and information for those who are non-Korean that want to experience and support the Korean fashion movement. I spend hours on end translating and googling to figure out where and when things are.

When it comes to designers I plan to attend the entire week but I think I’ll miss a day due to a 2 day field trip I have to go with my school on. Eh! I want to attend Vandalist by Vandal, Yoni P & Steve J, D.Gnak. I really wish the brand Joyrich would show there. Oh golly I’d be happy 😉
What advice would you give to young fashionistas that want to make a name overseas?

Advice I’d give is to first and foremost go after your dreams. If you want to be in Asia then prepare yourself for the big move. #1 COME WITH A GOAL. In life you can’t always plan how things will work out but if you know the goal you want to reach and achieve it will be a major help! At times living overseas you will feel alone, become overwhelmed quickly and easily be distracted from the things you want to achieve. So before you come save money, practice the language and find what connections you might have in Asia. When you get here, stay on that rode, give yourself monthly goals to make connections, network, and or attend as many events as you can. Take every opportunity around you no matter how afraid you are. Also pray about things and ask God to lead your footsteps.
You have an opportunity to meet Big Bang and style them for a photo shoot. What are YOU wearing to the meeting?
Woah! Trina shake me up! Wow, if I were going to a meeting to discuss styling BB. What would I wear? I’d wear a white cotton/polyester capped sleeve peplum top with a hot pink above the knee bandage skirt. I’d have my hair slicked in a big bun on top of my head with huge gold chandelier earrings. I’d add a huge gold ball ring and a floral charm bracelet on the other hand. To top it off I’d rock sky high black patent leather pumps with an over sized royal blue bag. First thing I pictured myself in after reading the question!

What to wear to a meeting with Big Bang??!!!

Many young teachers relocating to Korea know about the Canadian couple behindEat Your Kimchi Simon and Martina. How would you style them for a fan meet and greet in Seoul?
Oh I love them so much. I’ve met them twice and the first time was at their very first fan meet they had ever done. Girls were only asking them about Kpop stuff but when I got the turn I asked how they transitioned to blog/vlogging full time from being teachers. I knew what they were doing was something I wanted to do one day so to hear it from them in person was inspiring. It was great to hear their story and they were actually the ones who told me to start vlogging. Simon even visited my blog and commented! They are really cool people.

Hmm…I’d probably choose outfits that would intertwine with the style the usually wear. Martina likes 50’s style dresses so I think a form fitting white dress with polka dotted cherries would look great on her. The 50’s style shape would give her the look she loves, the cherries would represent her fun and colorful personality and the form fitting part would be a new look for her that’s meshed with the other elements. A tiny red belt around her waist and cherry earrings would accessories it. Black flats would top it off.

For Simon, he like to have fun with the “nerdy” look, (framed glasses suspenders and button ups.) I would style him in a black button up with a grey graphic t that has a picture of a woman from the 50’s on it (maybe a pinup girl or 50’s family picture.) For bottoms, he’d have a pair of black jeans with grayish shoes. To finish it off a pair of red glasses and an EYK key chain hanging from the front jean pocket. They would compliment each other nicely!
  • My Kpop Sock Collection

So I have a “small” addiction to purchasing socks…specifically Kpop socks here in Korea. I hadn’t realized how many I had until I organized my undies drawer and kept coming face to face with Kpop idols. A few of these I will actually be giving away in upcoming contest (of course the ones I haven’t worn yet. Lol.) Please enjoy the photos below. I thought it was cute and wanted to share. You can totally see my biases are 2NE1 and Big Bang. I know your wondering “Why not more Rain socks?” Well my dear friend..since Rain isn’t a youngin’ (he’s 31 for those who don’t know) it’s sometimes hard to run across 비 socks. But I eventually dig deep enough or find some good places that always have Rain in stock. And well that just means I MUST GO BUY MORE SOCKS! AHAHAHAHA

The entire collection minus a pair of Jokwon from 2AM because I forgot to add it in. 😉

  • My Love for NAILS!

Ever since moving to Asia I have fell in love with nail art. There’s just so much varity and things you can buy to make your nails look awesome. Nowadays it’s rare to see me without my nails done up. I usually share them on twitter but I thought why not post about it! Nail art is fashion and is an expression of ourselves. Also forgot to mention that I do my own nails! I guess you can call me a Lil’ Park Bom! Haha. Now it’s very cheap to get your nails done in at a shop in Korea, I’ve seen them for as little as $4 up to $20 (and $20 is crazy expensive in Korea.) Here I will show you some of my favorite polishes and nail accessories.  One thing I hate is that I didn’t get to show you all my 2NE1 “I Love you” video inspired nails I did for the 2NE1 New Evolution concert a few months back! I meant to blog about them but my computer soon crashed and my pictures were lost BUT I can just redo them because they were SO cute.

My current Nails I named “In Living Color” (like the 90’s show with the Wayen’s Bros.) These nails remind me of the 90’s so much. The polish is from Korean face & skin store Aritum for 3,500 Won ($3.10.)

These nails I named “Watermelon” because they reminded me of a hot summer day outside chillilng with the family slurping on melon. I used two neon colors I found for 1,000 Won in a shop in Myeongdong. The green confetti I found in a shop in Express Bus Terminal Subway.

These babies I named “Sparklerama” which is pretty self explanitory. The blue color is such an amazing and vibrant polish. These nails I actually transitioned to after the pink and blue nails under this photo. Both glitter polishes are from Korean face & skin shop Skin Food for 1,000 Won ($0.95.)

These were actually my first creation. I bought all the nail accessories at the Daiso store in Harajuku located on Takeshita Dori. Tokyo has the most EPIC nail accessores EVER. I also ATTEMPTED to get my nails done in Shibuya at Shibuya 109 but it was 7,000 Yen ($100!!!!!!!) JUST to get them painted. I said “UH NO THANKS!”

The rhinestones and flower were 330 Yen (I think about $1) in Japan while the Hello Kitty stickers I bought at Family Mart (now named CU) for 1,000 Won. The pink and blue polishes are available at Skin Food for about 1,500 Won ($1.20.)

The nail pens below I ran across at the Dara and Shinee sponsored Etude House for buy 1 get 1 free! (1,000 Won each) I love using these pens because it allows me to create whatever comes to mind with out getting messing using polish. Only negative is sometimes the paint will come out to much from the pin tip and make my design mess up. Ah!

     <<<<<– Buy 1 get 1 free!!
         Great Right?

Hope you all enjoyed my artistic nails! More pictures of my crazy creations next week! 😉

  • BIG BANG is NOT A MONSTER!

Wow, talk about Big Bang taking music and fashion further than anyone in the last 5 years! I prefer their avant garde clothing to any other artist, western or Asian. How a song and music video can fuse together so perfectly, only Big Bang can master. The name is MONSTER.

I don’t know how my reaction video got so long but when I start to talk I can’t stop!
    Basic Points:
    • The video starts out like the video game Doom
    • The cinematography reminds me of Sin City
    • Taeyang’s ram hair style looks like Big Worm from the movie Friday
    • How can TOP have so much swag in such a dire environment
    • Monster references I saw, Hellboy, Edward Scissorhands, Ghost Rider
    • The number on their chests reminded me of Justin T’s movie Out of Time
    • I MUST have Taeyang’s diamond encrusted ram necklace and Daesung’s horn nose ring!

    T.O.P looking so swaggalicious!

  • Farewell Betsey Johnson

I couldn’t believe the words I was reading. “Bankruptcy?” No, no, no, no and again no. How could this happen to the woman and clothing line that inspired who I am? How could no investors want to keep the brand alive?

Working at the Betsey Johnson brand was (and still is) a life time dream for me. To just have a moment to be in the presence of the most fierce woman in fashion, would mean the world. My current aspirations were to franchise one of her boutiques here in Asia. I’ve always felt such a connection to Betsey and the brand. Even my VERY first post for this blog was about the Betsey Johnson Trunk show I attended! In college I did my Brand Marketing final on her. I remember my male fashion instructor being quite frightened and non understanding of what made Betsey so special. He preferred more of the classic Tom Ford style: suits. cardigans, sweaters, scarves, so seeing me so estatic in presenting Betsey Johnson was not something he knew was coming. After seeing my enthusiastic presentation he then understood what made the BJ aesthetic so captivating.

I feel so connected to Betsey because she is me at 60. When I’m her age I want to be doing cartwheels and running back and forth to showrooms. She didn’t let cancer stop her from reaching her dreams. I will truly miss the Betsey Johnson brand. Though the runway will now longer be, the BJ licensing agreements will continue.

So with this whole bankruptcy thing, apparently investors didn’t like the idea of making the brand mass market. Now I agree with this but I don’t feel its any different than what’s happening with many of the ongoing BJ licensing agreements now. BJ can be bought at Marshals….MARSHALS! Maybe the investors weren’t aware of this but taking the brand mass market wouldn’t be anything new.

I am all for keeping the BJ runway brand exclusive because as we’ve seen with many clothing lines, as soon as it gets mainstream the exclusivity and quality goes down. If everyone is walking down the street with BJ, how is it unique and special anymore? Though I agree with keeping the line in the Contemporary to Better price market, I don’t agree with letting the brand go all together. I’m pretty sure an agreement could have been made.

A great idea would have been creating a secondary line like Marc by Marc Jacobs or DKNY. She already had Betseyville selling bags and accessories, they could have easily explanded the line to clothing. Everyone loves Betsey and it would have been a hit. Another route that a lot of designers have been taking is joining forces with fast fashion retails like H&M and Top Shop to create exclusive lines that appeal to the public in look AND price. Now I will exclude the Versace for H&M line. I saw a studded jacket in there for $800, That price didn’t appeal to me, it SCARED me. Lol

So in honor of the most abitious and fearless woman in fashion, here are my favorite current Betsey Johnson pieces. Also head on over to http://www.betseyjohnson.com/home/index.jsp for the going out of business sale!

At my college graduation posing in my FAVORITE BJ newspaper dress with my mom!

WE LOVE YOU BETSEY! LONG LIVE BETSEY!
