Places in Kansas City That Made Me Feel Like I Traveled Somewhere Else
☕ Cool Girl City
Most people think of Kansas City as barbecue, jazz, and sports.
And to be fair, they’re not wrong.
But while building my Kansas City World Cup Guide, I started noticing a different side of the city. One that doesn’t always make the brochures or travel lists.
A side where a cup of coffee, a quiet conversation, or a familiar scent can transport you somewhere else entirely.
Not because these places are trying to recreate another country.
But because they awaken memories, curiosity, and a sense of discovery.
These are a few of the places that made me feel like I had traveled somewhere else without ever leaving the Kansas City metro.
These aren’t the only places that made me feel transported. Find more globally inspired spots in my free Kansas City World Cup Guide. [Download Here]

Turath Coffee: A Moment That Took Me Back to Egypt
The first time I stepped into Turath Coffee, I stopped in my tracks.
The lanterns. The textiles. The aroma of Arabic coffee drifting through the café.
For a moment, I was reminded of wandering through local markets during my time in Egypt.
Not because Turath is Egypt.
It’s not.
It’s an Arabic coffeehouse that reflects a much broader cultural tradition.
But something about the atmosphere triggered a memory.
That’s one of the things I love most about travel.
Sometimes a place doesn’t have to be identical to remind you of another part of the world. It simply has to make you feel something familiar.
Turath did exactly that.
Tian Tea House: The Art of Slowing Down
Kansas City isn’t usually a place I associate with stillness.
Tian Tea House changed that.
The experience felt intentional from the moment I walked in. Tea wasn’t treated like a quick beverage. It was treated like a ritual.
The careful preparation.
The quiet atmosphere.
The invitation to slow down.
In a world that constantly pushes us toward the next thing, Tian reminded me that sometimes the experience is the destination.
It’s one of those rare places where the pace of the outside world seems to soften the moment you walk through the door.

Cafe Cà Phê: Looking Ahead to Vietnam
When I first visited Cafe Cà Phê, it reminded me of Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood.
Creative.
Colorful.
Full of personality.
But now that I have a trip to Vietnam on the horizon, I’ve started looking at the space differently.
As a Vietnamese-owned café, I’m excited to eventually experience the coffee culture that inspired so much of what makes the space feel special.
It’s funny how travel can work both directions.
Sometimes a place reminds you of somewhere you’ve already been.
Other times it makes you curious about a place you haven’t visited yet.
Cafe Cà Phê does the latter for me.
It makes me excited for what’s ahead.
European Market: A Piece of Eastern Europe in Kansas City
One of my favorite discoveries has been European Market.
I originally walked in hoping to find flavors that reminded me of Romania and Bulgaria.
What I found was something even better.
Shelves filled with products from countries and cultures that don’t always get much attention in conversations about Europe.
So much travel content focuses on Paris, London, or Rome.
European Market reminded me that Europe is much bigger than its most famous destinations.
One moment especially stuck with me.
A group of tall men gathered around a table sharing a large bowl of soup and conversation. The scene felt less like a restaurant and more like someone’s family kitchen.
It was one of those small, ordinary moments that made the space feel authentic.
The kind of moment you notice when you’re traveling.
And apparently, the kind of moment you can notice in Kansas City too.

The Side of Kansas City I Can’t Stop Exploring
The more I explore Kansas City, the more I realize that some of its most interesting stories are hiding in plain sight.
Not in the places everyone expects.
But in the cafés, tea houses, markets, and community spaces where cultures intersect and people share pieces of their heritage.
It’s one of the reasons I became so passionate about creating my World Cup Guide.
The world isn’t just coming to Kansas City.
In many ways, it’s already here.
You just have to know where to look.
