Natsu Matsuri KC

Yukari KC’s summer Japanese festival brings a little matsuri energy to the Kansas City area with taiko, shodo calligraphy demonstrations, goldfish scooping, water balloon fishing and a vendor market.
Why I’m watching it: This is exactly the kind of smaller community event that’s easy to miss if you’re only looking at the major Kansas City festival calendar.
Ethnic Enrichment Festival
August 21–23, 2026 · Swope Park
Kansas City’s annual Ethnic Enrichment Festival brings together more than 60 cultural organizations representing communities throughout the city.

India Fest
August 23, 2026 · Overland Park Convention Center · 11 AM–6 PM
The Indian Association of Kansas City hosts its annual India Fest, a major celebration of Indian culture, food and community.

ANIME, J-FASHION & POP CULTURE
Kawaii Rave: Kansas City
August 22, 2026 · Warehouse on Broadway · 9 PM
Anime-inspired nightlife is coming to KC.
If you’re looking for something considerably less traditional than a cultural festival, Kawaii Rave brings anime aesthetics, cosplay, K-pop and electronic music together for an adults-only night out.

Japanese Festival of St. Louis
September 5–7, 2026 · Missouri Botanical Garden
One of the largest Japanese festivals in the United States Labor Day weekend. Expect taiko, kendo demonstrations, and more throughout the Japanese Garden.

Kansas City Japan Festival
October 3, 2026 · Johnson County Community College · 10 AM–6 PM
Kansas City’s major annual Japanese cultural festival returns with a sumo-themed celebration that includes workshops, tea ceremony, calligraphy, Japanese travel phrases, and Japanese folklore/yokai programming.
This is one of the biggest single-day Japanese cultural events in the Kansas City area.
Chinese Harvest Celebration
September 26, 2026 · The Museum of Kansas City · 1 PM & 2 PM SLOTS
This Mid-Autumn celebration includes a free RSVP’d harvest celebration followed by separate hands-on mooncake making sessions.
Moon & Water Lantern Festival
October 3, 2026 · Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens · 3 PM–9 PM
Hosted by the Kansas City Chinese Association, this free event features lanterns floating on the water, lion and dragon dances and family programming.
Editor’s note: October 3 is an unusually busy weekend for Asian cultural events around KC, with this event happening alongside the KC Japan Festival.
Panda Fest Kansas City
October 9–11, 2026 · Legends Field, Kansas City, KS
A large traveling Asian food and culture festival featuring Asian food vendors, cultural performances and panda-themed attractions.
There are various time slots for each day, as well as a VIP ticket, so check out their website for more details.

Craft Ramen Guest Chef Popup Series
September 7, 2026 · Overland Park, KS
Craft Ramen regularly brings chefs from Japan to Kansas City for guest chef residencies. Past guests have included chefs from Tochigi, Nagoya, and Atsugi.
Rather than simply appearing for an afternoon, these chefs can take over the restaurant’s kitchen for a multi-day residency.
THIS MONTH’S FIND – Koteju from Hiroshima
Craft Ramen is also bringing in a Hiroshima okonomiyaki specialist for a one-day-only pop-up.
Why it’s worth watching: The lineup changes, so this is a section I’ll update whenever a new guest chef is announced. This is one that I’ve already purchased my ticket for since it’s rare to find okonomiyaki in the midwest. My mouth is already watering.

YEAR-ROUND EXPERIENCES
Some of Kansas City’s most interesting Japanese and Asian cultural experiences can be booked or visited throughout the year.
JAPANESE TEA
Loose Park Japanese Tea Room
Hidden inside the Japanese Garden at Loose Park is a small traditional tea room where private tea ceremonies can be arranged.
This isn’t a drop-in public event, it’s a private, bookable experience with a tea master. The room accommodates only a handful of guests, making it very different from attending a large festival.
Best for: a quiet, immersive cultural experience.
COOKING & FOOD EXPERIENCES
Japanese Cooking Classes
Local chef-led cooking classes are available throughout the year, including sushi and dumpling making.

BEYOND KANSAS CITY
Plan a cultural day trip or make a weekend of it.
Some of the Midwest’s best Asian cultural experiences are just a few hours from Kansas City. If an event catches your eye, turn it into a full day of exploring or stay overnight and make a weekend of it.

Japanese Festival of St. Louis

Why make the drive: This is the big regional Japanese festival worth planning a dedicated trip around. It’s about 3½ hours from Kansas City.

Seiwa-en Japanese Garden
The Japanese Garden inside the Missouri Botanical Garden is worth lingering in beyond the festival programming.
Little Saigon on South Grand
Explore one of St. Louis’ Vietnamese cultural and food corridors.

A K-pop and J-pop shop that gives the trip a contemporary pop-culture stop alongside the traditional festival experience.
St. Louis J-fashion community
If you’re interested in Japanese street fashion, look for local J-fashion community events and Harajuku Fashion Walk activities.

Asian Night Market Festival
October 2–3, 2026 · Oklahoma City’s Asian District
The festival features a pho eating contest, fashion show, live music, and other Asian cultural programming in the city’s Asian District. It’s roughly 3½-4 hours from Kansas City.

Start here. The district itself is the experience – restaurants, markets and businesses clustered around Oklahoma City’s Asian community.

Naka-Kon
Overland Park’s anime and Japanese culture convention normally takes place in the spring.
Lunar New Year
Kansas City has multiple Lunar New Year celebrations each year, including programming at the Nelson-Atkins, JCCC, Zhou B Art Center, KU and Lenexa Public Market.
AANHPI Festival
An annual pan-Asian, South Asian, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander event at Zhou B Art Center.
Japanese Shorts Festival
A Japanese cultural festival at Johnson County Community College featuring short-form programming celebrating Japanese culture.
